Teacher Interview

Chapter 7: Chapter 7 covers behavioral views of learning. I interviewed Rob Welch, a former English teacher for five years at Crete High School and current PE/Health teacher at Washington Junior High and Academy. Having experience at both the high school and middle school level I was curious as to how Rob handled situations from one job to the next dealing with different age groups. What I found from my interview that tied into the behavior in classrooms and how those were handled is an effect of Rob's energy in the classroom and what he preaches to his students. Respect, responsibility and safety. As a future teacher I believe in all three myself, however, instilling this into your ways of teaching will effect your students and how specific situations are handled. Adopting respect for others and treating those around you the way you want to be treated will play a role in that student's behavior when situations arise. Taking responsibility for your own actions builds character and teaches kids self-discipline. My thoughts are if you can create this atmosphere in your classroom it'll play a key roles in a child's behavior and how they learn.

Chapter 13: "Maintaining a positive and organized classroom setting free from disruption is critical to providing an instructional environment conducive to teaching and learning. Yet it is by no means an easy task" (Skiba et al., 2016, p.120). During my interview, I asked Rob about his classroom management and how it differentiated from the classroom to the gymnasium. When in the classroom Rob said he would use certain markers and ques to acknowledge the behavior and try to get the student back on track with what they were doing. When in the gymnasium, he mentioned he pulls the student aside immediately, lets them know about their behavior, has a talk and gets them back involved with the other students. As a future teacher I would agree with Robs approach when dealing with issues in both the classroom and gymnasium. Pulling a student aside in the classroom, disrupting the lesson and everyone's engagement is unfair to those around you when trying to learn. Achieving order in the classroom by gaining cooperation is important in creating the comfortable, open atmosphere enabling your students to feel more open minded and speak what they want to say.
